Madelaine Watkins
Psychiatric Nurse and Clinical Nurse Specialist for Voices and Visions in Mental Health Services for Older People, Madeleine also pioneers voices and visions work across the University Health Board in Cardiff, and works to improve attitudes and understanding towards people who hear voices, see visions and experience altered states at any age.

Madelaine Watkins is a mental health nurse and Clinical Nurse Specialist in Psychosis in Older Adults at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. She was named RCN Wales Nurse of the Year 2024 in recognition of her pioneering work developing more trauma-informed, relational and psychologically informed approaches to supporting people experiencing voices, visions and altered states.
Madelaine is a Wellbeing in Nature Practitioner, Open Dialogue facilitator and trauma therapist. She has a deep passion for non-pathologising and relational approaches to distress, and works to help spark the urgent change needed in the current mental health system.
Based in Cardiff, Madelaine is passionate about reducing stigma around voice hearing and creating compassionate spaces where people can make sense of their experiences without fear or judgement.
She is connected with the Hearing Voices Network and has trained “Voices & Visions Champions” across services in Wales.
Madelaine recently co-produced the first “Voices and Visions” intergenerational pop-up therapeutic community gathering in Cardiff, bringing together clinicians, carers, voice hearers and community members in dialogue and shared learning.
